Product Overview
MXD6 is a semi-aromatic polyamide (poly-meta-xylylene adipamide) engineered for high-barrier packaging applications. With an oxygen transmission rate of about 0.04 cm³/m²·24h·bar at 50 μm film thickness, it delivers barrier performance comparable to EVOH 32 mol%, while retaining excellent processability on conventional blown-film and cast-film lines.
Unlike EVOH, whose oxygen barrier degrades sharply at high humidity, MXD6 maintains its barrier performance even at 100% relative humidity. This makes it the preferred barrier layer for retort, hot-fill and high-moisture food applications. It also provides outstanding aroma and odor barrier — validated in onion, citrus and essential-oil permeation tests — plus UV blocking across 200–380 nm, extending product shelf life and protecting sensitive contents.

Applications in Detail
Food Packaging Barrier Layers
MXD6 is widely used as the barrier layer in multilayer food packaging films and trays, where it protects contents from oxygen, moisture vapor and odors. Its barrier performance holds at high humidity, making it suitable for cheese, meat, sauce, coffee and dried-food packaging that requires long shelf life.
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)
In MAP applications, the package is flushed with nitrogen or CO₂ to slow spoilage. MXD6's low oxygen transmission keeps the modified atmosphere stable for weeks, reducing food waste and preserving freshness, color and nutrition. It co-extrudes cleanly with LDPE, LLDPE and other polyolefins.
Cosmetic, Chemical & Industrial Barrier Containers

How does MXD6 compare with EVOH as a barrier material?
MXD6 offers oxygen barrier performance similar to EVOH at dry conditions, but unlike EVOH it retains that barrier at high humidity and in hot-fill or retort processes. It is also easier to process and recycle in multilayer polyolefin structures, with no need for tie-layer adhesives in many configurations.
What is the oxygen transmission rate of MXD6?
At 50 μm film thickness, our MXD6 achieves an oxygen transmission rate of approximately 0.04 cm³/m²·24h·bar measured at 23°C. Actual values depend on film thickness, structure and processing conditions; we provide test data with sample orders.
Can MXD6 be processed on standard film lines?
Yes. MXD6 can be processed on conventional blown-film and cast-film co-extrusion lines with standard nylon processing conditions (melt temperature 250–280°C). It bonds well with polyolefins in multilayer structures and supports printing and lamination.
Does MXD6 need drying before processing?
Yes. Like all nylons, MXD6 is hygroscopic. Dry at 80–90°C for 4–6 hours before processing and keep moisture below 0.1% to prevent hydrolysis, bubble formation and reduced barrier performance.
