Buy silane XLPE as a matched set, keep packaging moisture-tight and storage dry, and confirm four process parameters before the trial.
Grafted compound and catalyst masterbatch must be bought as a set
Silane crosslinkable polyethylene is not one pellet. The grafted compound supplies silane groups; the catalyst masterbatch supplies the catalyst that starts crosslinking. The Wanma XLPE family Jinsu supplies carries four grades — 101A, 101B, 201A and 103.
Grafted compound without its matching catalyst leaves silane groups unable to form a network. The insulation stays thermoplastic and fails hot-set and hot-deformation testing.
A damaged bag starts crosslinking while still in stock
Grafted silane compound reacts as soon as moisture reaches it. Foil laminate bags, sealed inner liners and plain woven sacks differ clearly in moisture barrier.
Confirm three items before ordering: packaging material and net weight per bag, whether vacuumed or nitrogen flushed, and permitted exposure time after opening. Once a bag is compromised the reaction begins in the warehouse and shows up as scorch and rough surface during extrusion.
Storage temperature and shelf life are grade-specific across all four grades
The core of storage is excluding moisture and heat. The warehouse should be dry and ventilated, out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and not co-stored with water-bearing materials.
Request the temperature range, maximum storage period and re-test method for the specific grade. These values are not interchangeable across 101A, 101B, 201A and 103. Where plant humidity is high, add dehumidification or shorten the post-opening use window.
Four process parameters decide whether a failed trial can be attributed
Most failed trials are crosslinking conditions, not material faults. Four parameters must be in hand beforehand: crosslinking method (warm water, steam or ambient), crosslinking temperature, crosslinking time and extrusion temperature range.
Confirm the cable construction the grade fits: insulation wall range, conductor size range, and whether it serves overhead insulated cable or industrial wiring. When Jinsu supplies Wanma material these are checked item by item against the grade and project requirement.
Silane XLPE supply routes compared
The table is built from the documents and process support each route normally provides. Verify against the supplier's current TDS and certification before specifying.
| Supply route | Grade system | Process support | Documents | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jinsu with Wanma (101A / 101B / 201A / 103) | Grafted compound and catalyst as a set | Method, temperature and time checked per grade | TDS and certification checked against finished cable | Sample and MOQ confirmed per grade |
| Other domestic silane producers | Grafted compound usually sold alone | Catalyst matching falls to the buyer | Mainly TDS | Depends on schedule |
| International brand compounds | Complete system | Process window supplied | Full document set | Often 6–12 weeks |
| Trader resale | Depends on source | Usually not supplied | Shipping documents only | Depends on stock |
Samples and production orders are confirmed separately
Samples verify crosslinking and extrusion; production orders verify batch consistency. Sample quantity, minimum order quantity and lead time are confirmed per grade and project requirement.
At the trial stage request the TDS and certification documents for that batch and check they match the production batch. Certification requirements are checked against the intended use and construction of the finished cable, not the material grade alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why must silane XLPE be bought as grafted compound plus catalyst masterbatch?
Crosslinking needs the catalyst in the masterbatch to start. Grafted compound alone leaves silane groups unable to form a network, so the insulation never becomes thermoset.
How long can silane XLPE compound sit after the bag is opened?
It depends on the grade; request the permitted exposure time from the supplier. A damaged or long-open bag lets moisture in, crosslinking starts early, and scorch appears during extrusion.
How are storage temperature and shelf life for silane XLPE set?
Confirm the temperature range and maximum storage period per grade, and re-test after expiry. Keep the warehouse dry, ventilated, shaded and away from water-bearing materials.
Which parameters must be obtained before running a trial?
Four: crosslinking method, crosslinking temperature, crosslinking time and extrusion temperature range. Missing any one makes a failed trial impossible to attribute.
Which cable constructions does silane XLPE suit?
Insulation wall range and conductor size range are confirmed per grade. Power cable insulation, overhead insulated cable and industrial wiring are checked separately.
