Engineering Plastics for the Automotive Industry: Material Selection & Solutions
A comprehensive guide to engineering plastics applications across interior, exterior, powertrain, and lighting
The automotive industry is one of the largest consumers of engineering plastics. Driven by the three mega-trends of lightweighting, electrification, and intelligence, plastic material usage in vehicles continues to grow — from bumpers to dashboards, from engine covers to headlights, engineering plastics are replacing more and more metal components. This article consolidates Jinsu's engineering plastics solutions across four core automotive application areas, covering product recommendations and technical highlights for ABS, PA6, PC, PMMA, and other key materials.
1. ABS for Automotive Interior Trim
ABS, with its excellent surface gloss, good processability, and cost-effectiveness, is one of the most commonly used plastic materials for automotive interior trim — dashboard trims, door handles, AC vents, center console panels, and more. Heat-resistant ABS meets automotive interior temperature requirements (Vicat ≥105°C), widely replacing more expensive PC/ABS alloys at lower cost. Jinsu offers both transparent and heat-resistant ABS series with custom color matching, MOQ from 25kg. Also suitable for appliance and office chair industry injection molders in bulk.
**Recommended Grades:** • Transparent ABS — High transparency for decorative interior trim needing light transmission • Heat-Resistant ABS — Vicat ≥105°C for dashboard components near heat sources
2. PA6 for Under-Hood Components
Glass-fiber reinforced PA6 (PA6+GF30) is the core material for under-hood components — engine covers, intake manifolds, radiator fans, cylinder head covers, and more. PA6+GF30 combines high strength (tensile ≥170 MPa), high heat resistance (HDT ≥200°C), and excellent oil resistance — making it a key metal replacement option. Compared to PA66, PA6 offers lower processing temperatures (230-280°C vs 260-300°C), less mold wear, and 20-30% lower raw material cost. Jinsu supplies both general-purpose PA6 and PA6+GF30 reinforced grades with free samples for testing.
**Recommended Grades:** • PA6+GF30 — Tensile ≥170MPa, HDT >200°C, best choice for engine covers • PA66+GF30 — Higher rigidity (flexural modulus 9000-10000 MPa) for extreme-temperature applications
3. PC for Headlight Lenses & Covers
Polycarbonate (PC), with its ultra-high light transmission (≥88%), impact strength (Izod ≥60 kJ/m²), and heat resistance (HDT 125-135°C), has become the mainstream material for automotive headlight lenses and covers, fully replacing traditional glass. PC lenses weigh only 1/3 of glass, offer greater design freedom (complex curved surfaces), and provide better safety (no sharp fragments on breakage). UV-resistant coating is required for long-term outdoor service life. Jinsu supplies high-transparency PC raw material with ≥88% light transmission, supporting both injection and extrusion grade requirements.
**Recommended Grades:** • Transparent PC — Light transmission ≥88%, Izod ≥60 kJ/m², for headlight lenses
4. PMMA for Automotive Lighting Covers
PMMA (Acrylic), with its 92% ultra-high light transmission and excellent weatherability, holds an important position in optical-grade applications such as automotive taillight covers, DRL light guides, and dashboard transparent panels. Compared to PC, PMMA offers higher light transmission (92% vs 88%), better UV yellowing resistance, and higher surface hardness (scratch resistance), though impact strength is lower. PMMA is therefore better suited for lighting cover applications demanding high optical clarity but not primary load-bearing. Jinsu supplies high-transparency PMMA raw material for both injection and extrusion processing.
**Recommended Grades:** • PMMA — Light transmission ≥92%, for taillight covers and light guides
